CPR Basics : Hands-Only CPR for Adults: Step-by-Step

When every second counts, knowing how to perform hands-only CPR can double or triple a person’s chances of survival. This quick, effective technique is designed for bystanders with little to no training. Here's how to do it:

  1. Check for responsiveness. Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?”

  2. Call 911 immediately. Or instruct someone else to do so.

  3. Place the heel of your hand on the center of their chest. Put your other hand on top and interlock your fingers.

  4. Push hard and fast. Aim for a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute. Think of the beat of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

  5. Don’t stop until help arrives. Or until the person shows signs of life.
